Community Partnerships

Perth Airport considers our relationship with the Western Australian community an essential part of our company values. We are committed to long term relationships, working with communities to build an effective working relationship and contributing to a wide range of initiatives.

Perth Airport has identified the following areas where we are committed to creating and sustaining long term relationships, supporting communities through sponsorships and new programs. In 2008/09 our community partnerships comprised of the following projects: Community Investment, Land care and Environment and Indigenous Culture.

Community Investment

Perth Airport takes the opportunity to support community programs and sponsorships, resulting in positive, sustainable benefits to communities.

Redcliffe Primary School win the Schools First Impact Award

Congratulations to Redcliffe Primary School, who along with Perth Airport as their leading community supporter won the state award for the National Australia Bank, Schools First Impact Awards.

Seven Western Australian schools were finalists and each received $50,000, with funding going toward very worthy programs and initiatives. These seven schools along with Redcliffe Primary School were placed into the state final.
 
As the winner of the Schools First Impact Award, Redcliffe Primary School won a further $100, 000 for the school. Redcliffe Primary School will now go on to the national awards to be announced late November with up to $500 000 to be won.

Mission Australia's Christmas Day Lunch

Perth Airport provided support to Mission Australia’s Christmas Day ‘Lunch in the Park’ for those in the community less fortunate.

Redcliffe Primary School

Redcliffe Primary School, located in close proximity to the Perth Airport’s Domestic Terminals received hooded fleece tops for students to wear for school sport carnivals and during the cooler months. The students undertook classes on aviation history and selected school faction names inspired from aviation pioneers.

Darling Range Sports College East Kimberley Trek 

The Darling Range Sports College received support to assist their Year 12 students embark on a Leadership Challenge. The seven day trek through the East Kimberley taught the students valuable leadership, orienteering and survival skills.

Freeway Bike Hike - Asthma Foundation

Staff, families and friends of Perth Airport got behind the fifth annual HBF Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma. This event saw some of our team members cycle 30km from Belmont Park Racecourse through the Graham Farmer Tunnel and up the southbound lane of the Mitchell Freeway, finishing on Grand Boulevard, Joondalup. The event was a huge success – attracting 8007 participants – who raised much needed funds for the Asthma Foundation’s continued support of the 225,000 plus West Australians living with this potentially life threatening disease.

3 Minute Bike Challenge

Youth Focus is an early intervention and prevention service for youth at risk and provides support for families. Perth Airport team members volunteered their time to assist at Movies at Burswood, with all profits going to the Youth Focus. Perth Airport staff additionally participated in a stationary bike ride to raise funds for the Youth Focus ‘Hawaiian Ride for Youth’. Staff cycled for a mere 3 minutes compared to the Ride for Youth cyclists who will ride approximately 700km from Albany to Perth over 5 days in March.

Auctioning Surrendered Items for Princess Margaret Hospital

Perth Airport commenced a new initiative which sees surrendered items, typically utensils and sharps which are surrendered through the security process both the International Terminal and Domestic Terminal 3, auctioned with proceeds being going toward the purchase of essential equipment for children undergoing treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital.

Red Cross Victorian Bush Fire Appeal

A donation of $20,000 was made to the Red Cross Appeal for victims of the Victorian Bushfires and our team members were also inspired to co-ordinate a collection of donated clothing, food and children’s toys. We were thrilled with the response by not only our team members, but airline staff and by the families from Our Lady of Assumption Primary School in Dianella.

Autumn River Festival

City of Belmont’s Autumn River Festival was held at Garvey Park, attracting local community residents. Perth Airport supported this local community event by sponsoring all of the water activities – the gondola rides in particular proving to be very popular on the day. Perth Airport’s Executive Team also volunteered their time, serving free fish and chips from and handing out hundreds of orange and blue balloons for the kids.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

Perth Airport is a proud supporter of the Cancer Council WA and in May took part in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Two morning teas were held at the airport - one for tenants and team members at hKew Alpha, as well as one held at the International Terminal. Both morning teas were a great success.

City to Surf 2009

Perth Airport staff and their friends participated in the City to Surf as part of the record breaking 38,800 participants. As participants in the City to Surf, Perth Airport supported the Activ Association, one of Western Australia’s leading community organisations which has been providing services and support to people with disability since 1951.

Land care and Environment

Perth Airport actively manages 350 hectares of protected conservation areas across the estate – close to three-quarters the size of Kings Park. These sites are shared with the community and our team members through a number of initiatives.

Annual Schools Planting Week

The Annual Schools Planting Program was held over two weeks and attracted the participation of 20 groups of school children from 13 local schools. Together with teachers, the children planted over 6,000 seedlings on the estate. A Nearer to Nature representative from the Department of Environment and Conservation joined the planting groups to impart knowledge and skills, related to Indigenous culture.

Revegetation Seeding

Over the winter months, Perth Airport conducts its annual revegetation program within the estate’s conservation areas. This year, direct seeding was undertaken with seed collected from 88 plant species and was used to seed 1.6ha of degraded land. This initiative was undertaken with the assistance from Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting Staff along with staff from Perth Airport.

Educational Website

Click here to link to the dedicated educational component to enhance children’s environmental and cultural education. The site provides educational modules for teachers, and an opportunity to subscribe to Captain Crews News, a quarterly, children’s newsletter focussed on flora and fauna found on the Perth Airport estate.

Indigenous Culture

Perth Airport has established and maintained relationships with Indigenous communities through providing opportunities in education and training and supporting Aboriginal arts and culture.

NAIDOC Week 2009 - Partnership Agreement signing Ceremony

Perth Airport formally celebrated NAIDOC week for the second consecutive year by acknowledging Aboriginal culture and heritage. Perth Airport welcomed guests to the International Terminal to celebrate the signing of a monumental Partnership Agreement which strengthens the bond Perth Airport has with traditional owners and the wider Aboriginal community. The Hon. Dr Kim Hames MLA, Deputy Premier, Minister for Health and Minister for Indigenous Affairs, officiated at the signing ceremony commencing with a traditional Welcome to Country, by Patrick Hume followed by a didgeridoo performance and Aboriginal dancers. Perth Airport and the Aboriginal Elders were actively engaging to draft the Partnership Agreement which represents our company,  the Traditional Owners and other Aboriginal Elders’ commitments to engage in good faith for the ongoing development of Perth Airport and Aboriginal cultural heritage. The agreement will assist in appropriately managing the heritage sites located on Perth Airport, many of which continue to have spiritual and archaeological significance. The signing of this document is the beginning of a new chapter and commitment for all those involved. The agreement includes support for projects to benefit the local Aboriginal community, employment of members of the Aboriginal community for cultural heritage awareness and land management activities as well as scholarships for Aboriginal students undertaking university studies.

NAIDOC Week 2009 -Staff Cultural Talk

Perth Airport team members attended an educational talk on Aboriginal culture by guest speaker, Karen Jacobs. Karen spoke of the history of the traditional owners in the Perth Metropolitan Region, issues faced by Aboriginal people today, and challenges ahead as Australia progresses further in reconciliation.

NAIDOC Week 2009 - Art Exhibition Morning Tea

Perth Airport provided Aboriginal art students from Central TAFE – Fremantle Campus, the opportunity to display their works, viewed by our team members and passengers at the International Terminal. Perth Airport acquired Dreaming Tracks, by Chantelle Yarran, which is now displayed in our corporate office, Alpha hKew. Dreaming Tracks was featured on a postcard handed to arriving passengers at the International Terminal during NAIDOC week, explaining the significance of the Noongar people and the airport estate.

NAIDOC Week 2009 - Munday Swamp Tours

Munday Swamp, located within the airport estate, is a place of great significance to the Noongar people. It is one of the most important Aboriginal sites in the Perth Metropolitan Area, and is a traditional meeting place and hunting ground. Representatives from the Aboriginal community led Perth Airport team members on a tour of Munday Swamp where the cultural and environmental significance of the site was discussed.

City of Belmont Indigenous Art Award

Sponsoring the City of Belmont Art and Photographic Awards, Indigenous Art Award. Perth Airport supported this award for its second consecutive year with the aim to inspire artists to continue their career and raise awareness of their artwork within the wider community.

City of Belmont Business Awards, Indigenous Business of the Year Award

Sponsoring the Belmont Business Awards, Indigenous Business of the Year. Also in its second year, this award seeks to encourage those operating an Indigenous business to enter.
